Meet Magistra Kat

Salvete! My name is Kat Kauthen. I live on the beautiful Central Coast of California and have 8 children, including 2 sets of twins.

My adventure with the Latin language began in 3rd grade when I met the same Caecilius and Metella as our students in Living Latin Lessons. I continued Latin studies throughout my homeschool education, culminating with my Senior project, where I translated several books of Virgil’s Aeneid. I went on to UCLA, where I received a bachelor’s degree in Economics. While there, I took every opportunity to pursue my love of language, taking courses in Italian, Dutch, and of course, Latin. My language studies were also enhanced by extensive travel in France, deepening my love of European history and culture and the French language.

After college, I decided to fulfill the dream I had since high school: teaching Latin to homeschool students. During my 10 years of teaching, classes were dynamic and interactive. From wearing togas to sampling Roman food, my teaching approach combined text book learning with lively activities. I’m beyond thrilled to work with Magistra Reed in sharing our love of Latin!
